Finding Anchors in the Aftermath: Ritual, Resilience, and Post-Traumatic Growth

Being a Jewish psychologist these past few years has involved some of the hardest professional experiences of my life. In the face of profound institutional and relational ruptures, I found myself watching a field I love move away from nuance and toward myopic binaries.

What ultimately grounded me, however, was recognizing how deeply our ancient Jewish rituals and communal frameworks overlap with the established psychological principles of trauma recovery, resilience, and post-traumatic growth.

In my latest article, I take a compassionate look at this intersection. By framing collective trauma, vigilance, and identity reconstruction through the lens of Shavuot and the profound psychological resistance demonstrated by Israeli hostages, I explore how tradition can become a vital, organizing framework in times of uncertainty.

An excerpt from the article:

Trauma destabilizes meaning. Ritual helps restore continuity... What we witnessed — both among the hostages and throughout Jewish communal life after October 7th — was something profoundly human. Even under extraordinary suffering, people turn toward ritual, connection, imagination, meaning, and one another. Not because they are untouched by grief, but because these practices help preserve humanity in the midst of it.
